BMW R1250R Oil Change Maintenance Checklist

Orientation Reference

Important: Left and Right sides are defined from the rider's perspective (sitting on the motorcycle). To make it intuitive, this mirrored schematic aligns the rider's Left to the left side of your screen, and Rider's Right to the right side.

10 mm Hex (Allen) socket
74 mm 14-Flute Oil Filter wrench
Torque wrench (range covering 11 Nm - 42 Nm)
3/8" Drive Ratchet & extension
Oil drain pan (minimum 4.5L capacity)
Clean funnel
Torx T30 key (if engine guards are installed)
Nitrile gloves & clean shop towels

Materials & Parts

4.0 Liters SAE 5W-40 API SL / JASO MA2 synthetic oil
New BMW Oil Filter (Part: 11 42 7 721 779 or Mahle OC 619)
New Aluminum Crush Washer (M20, 20x24x1.5mm)
Degreaser or brake cleaner (for cleanup)
GS-911 or MotoScan OBD scanner (optional, to reset indicator)

Prep 1. Preparation

Warm up engine Start and idle the motorcycle for 2–3 minutes to warm the oil. This reduces its viscosity and allows it to drain more quickly and thoroughly. Turn off the engine.

Position motorcycle Place the motorcycle securely on its center stand (if equipped) or on paddock stands on a level, solid surface to ensure the bike is completely vertical for accurate draining and oil level checks.

Set up workspace Place a clean oil drain pan under the engine. Remove the lower engine guard or skid plate if Torx T30 bolts block access to the drain plug or filter (Note: This is typically not required if OEM engine guards are installed, but may be necessary with certain aftermarket/non-OEM guards). Clean the surrounding areas to prevent debris entry.

Drain 2. Draining Engine Oil

Open oil filler cap Remove the black oil filler cap on the right cylinder head using the plastic key tool (found in your onboard tool kit or use fingers). This acts as a vent, encouraging smooth draining.

Remove oil drain plug Use the 10 mm hex socket to loosen the drain plug under the oil sump. Remove it slowly by hand to avoid dropping the plug in the hot oil pan. Caution: the oil may be hot!

Drain oil completely Allow the engine oil to empty into the drain pan completely. Wait 10 to 15 minutes until it slows to an occasional drip.

Clean drain plug & magnet Inspect and clean the magnetic drain plug threads with a clean shop towel. Remove any tiny metal fuzz accumulated on the magnet (a normal indicator of engine wear).

Filter 3. Oil Filter & Sealing

Remove old oil filter Position the oil drain pan under the front-bottom filter area. Fit the 74 mm 14-flute filter wrench over the filter and turn counterclockwise to loosen and remove it. Empty the filter oil into the pan.

Inspect & clean mating surface Wipe the circular mating surface on the engine block with a clean shop towel. CRITICAL: Confirm that the black rubber O-ring gasket came off with the old filter and did not stick to the engine block.

Prep new oil filter Lubricate the rubber O-ring seal of the new oil filter with a thin film of clean engine oil. Optionally, pour about 100ml of clean oil into the filter to reduce dry start time.

Install & torque new filter11 Nm / 8.1 ft-lb / 97 in-lb Thread the new filter onto the engine block by hand (clockwise) to prevent cross-threading. Tighten it securely using the filter wrench and torque wrench set to exactly 11 Nm (8.1 ft-lbs or 97 in-lbs).

Reinstall & torque drain plug42 Nm / 31 ft-lb / 372 in-lb Discard the old crush washer. Install a new A20x24 aluminum crush washer onto the clean drain plug. Hand-thread the plug into the engine sump. Torque the drain plug to exactly 42 Nm (31 ft-lbs or 372 in-lbs).

Fill 4. Refilling Engine Oil

Add fresh engine oil Insert a clean funnel into the right cylinder head fill hole. Pour in approximately 3.7 to 3.8 Liters of SAE 5W-40 API SL / JASO MA2 synthetic engine oil. Leaving the remaining 0.2L allows you to top off to the perfect level later.

Reinstall oil filler cap Clean the filler cap O-ring, verify it's clean, remove the funnel, and securely lock the filler cap back in place.

Verify 5. Verification & Testing

Idle engine Start the engine and run at idle for 1-2 minutes. Verify that the engine runs smoothly and no warning indicators appear on the dashboard. Do NOT rev the engine during this phase.

Inspect for leaks Use a flashlight to carefully inspect the oil filter seating ring and the sump drain plug for any weeping, seeping, or leaks while the engine runs.

Verify sight glass level Shut off the engine and let the bike sit for 5 to 10 minutes to allow the oil to settle. Check the sight glass on the right side of the engine block. The level should be near the top edge of the red circle. Add small increments of oil to top off if needed. Do not exceed the maximum line.

Reset service light & log details If available, connect a GS-911 diagnostics unit or MotoScan app to reset the service maintenance indicator. Log the date, mileage, and parts/oil types used in your personal service records.
