BMW S1000R Oil Change Maintenance Checklist

Orientation Reference

Important: Left and Right sides are defined from the rider's perspective (sitting on the motorcycle). To make it intuitive, this mirrored schematic aligns the rider's Left to the left side of your screen, and Rider's Right to the right side.

Materials & Parts

4.0 Liters SAE 5W-40 API SL / JASO MA2 synthetic oil
New BMW Oil Filter (Part: 11 42 5 B70 298 or Mahle OC1824)
New Aluminum Crush Washer (M16, 16x20x1.5mm)
Degreaser or brake cleaner (for cleanup)
GS-911 or MotoScan OBD scanner (optional, to reset indicator)

Prep 1. Preparation

Warm up engine Start and idle the motorcycle for 2–3 minutes to warm the oil. This reduces its viscosity and allows it to drain more quickly and thoroughly. Turn off the engine.

Position motorcycle Place the motorcycle securely on paddock stands (rear stand minimum, front/rear combination recommended) on a level, solid surface to ensure the bike is completely vertical and level for accurate draining and oil level checks.

Remove right side fairings Use a Torx T25 driver to remove the fasteners holding the right side fairing (radiator cowl) and lower right fairing (chin guard) in place. Carefully remove these panels and place them aside to gain clear access to the oil filter and the oil drain plug underneath the sump. Clean the surrounding area.

Drain 2. Draining Engine Oil

Open oil filler cap Remove the black oil filler cap on the right-side engine clutch cover using your fingers or a cap removal tool. This acts as a vent, encouraging smooth draining.

Remove oil drain plug Place a clean oil drain pan under the engine. Use a Torx T50 bit to loosen and remove the oil drain plug under the oil sump. Remove it slowly by hand to avoid dropping the plug in the hot oil pan. Caution: the oil may be hot!

Drain oil completely Allow the engine oil to empty into the drain pan completely. Wait 10 to 15 minutes until it slows to an occasional drip.

Clean drain plug & magnet Inspect and clean the magnetic drain plug threads with a clean shop towel. Remove any tiny metal fuzz accumulated on the magnet (a normal indicator of engine wear).

Filter 3. Oil Filter & Sealing

Remove old oil filter Position the oil drain pan under the front-right filter area. Fit the 74 mm 14-flute filter wrench over the filter and turn counterclockwise to loosen and remove it. Empty the filter oil into the pan. (Note: Placing foil or cardboard over the headers helps keep them clean).

Inspect & clean mating surface Wipe the circular mating surface on the engine block with a clean shop towel. CRITICAL: Confirm that the black rubber O-ring gasket came off with the old filter and did not stick to the engine block.

Prep new oil filter Lubricate the rubber O-ring seal of the new oil filter (Part: 11 42 5 B70 298 or Mahle OC1824) with a thin film of clean engine oil. Optionally, pour about 100ml of clean oil into the filter to reduce dry start time.

Install & torque new filter11 Nm / 8.1 ft-lb / 97 in-lb Thread the new filter onto the engine block by hand (clockwise) to prevent cross-threading. Tighten it securely using the filter wrench and torque wrench set to exactly 11 Nm (8.1 ft-lbs or 97 in-lbs).

Reinstall & torque drain plug28 Nm / 20.6 ft-lb / 248 in-lb Discard the old crush washer. Install a new M16 aluminum crush washer (BMW Part: 07 11 9 963 252) onto the clean drain plug. Hand-thread the plug into the engine sump. Torque the drain plug to exactly 28 Nm (20.6 ft-lbs or 248 in-lbs).

Fill 4. Refilling Engine Oil

Add fresh engine oil Insert a clean funnel into the right clutch cover fill hole. Pour in approximately 3.5 to 3.7 Liters of SAE 5W-40 API SL / JASO MA2 synthetic engine oil. Leaving the remaining volume allows you to top off to the perfect level later without overfilling.

Reinstall oil filler cap Clean the filler cap O-ring, verify it's clean, remove the funnel, and securely lock the filler cap back in place on the clutch cover.

Verify 5. Verification & Testing

Idle engine Start the engine and run at idle for 1-2 minutes. Verify that the engine runs smoothly and no warning indicators appear on the dashboard. Do NOT rev the engine during this phase.

Inspect for leaks Use a flashlight to carefully inspect the right-side oil filter seating ring and the bottom sump drain plug for any weeping, seeping, or leaks while the engine runs.

Verify sight glass level Shut off the engine and let the bike sit for 5 to 10 minutes to allow the oil to settle. Check the sight glass on the right side of the engine clutch cover. The level should be between the MIN and MAX marks (ideally near the top edge of the red circle) with the bike held upright on a level surface. Add small increments of oil to top off if needed. Do not exceed the maximum line.

Reset service light & log details If available, connect a GS-911 diagnostics unit or MotoScan app to reset the service maintenance indicator. Log the date, mileage, and parts/oil types used in your personal service records.

Finish 6. Cleanup & Reassembly

Reinstall right side fairings Reinstall the right side fairing (radiator cowl) and lower right fairing (chin guard) back onto their brackets. Hand-thread and tighten the T25 Torx fasteners securely. Double-check that no hoses or wires are pinched.
